On September 11 and 12, 2026, the historical days of Candamo 36/37 will take place in San Román de Candamo, dedicated to the events of the Civil War and revolutionary processes in Asturias. In 2026, the event takes on special significance: it marks the 90th anniversary of the start of the Civil War in Spain.
The history of Asturias in 1936–1937 was extremely rich and tragic. The military uprising of July 1936 quickly divided the region, while the political crisis was almost simultaneously accompanied by a deep social revolution.
It is these events that Candamo 36/37 tells about.
Miner Train to Madrid
One of the themes of the event will be the famous tren minero, or “miner train”.
The organizers’ publication includes a phrase that accompanied an illustration by Joaquín Valverde in volume XV of Historia de la Cruzada Española. The drawing depicted an episode related to the departure of the famous miner train towards Madrid.
The history of this train will be one of the starting points for visitors to learn about the events of the early days of the war.
Asturias in the Summer of 1936
The organizers describe this period as a time when Asturias was simultaneously experiencing war and revolution.
While Colonel Aranda was consolidating his position in Oviedo and the rebel columns were advancing, a new power structure was forming in the republican rear. Local committees and workers’ militias emerged, playing an increasingly prominent role in political and social life.
Thus, the events of 1936 cannot be viewed solely as a military confrontation. At the same time, a large-scale transformation of society and the system of governance was taking place.
90 Years Since the Start of the Civil War
In 2026, it will be 90 years since the start of the Civil War in Spain, so the next edition of Candamo 36/37 will be directly related to this anniversary.
The organizers invite visitors to learn about the events that were pivotal not only for Candamo itself but also for the history of all of Asturias.
